Students throw surprise baby shower for teacher

By Alisha Weight

On Thursday February 16, 2012 two students of Mrs. Taylors Health Tech class threw her a surprise baby shower. Students who were involved got out of 8th period to go help set up the cafeteria for the surprise baby shower. The idea was brought up at the HOSA banquet by Sadie Jackson and Alex Veit. The two girls talked to Mrs. Taylors parents Mr. and Mrs. Vargo during the HOSA banquet to set their idea up. There was a poster to sign you name and address stating you were there and so they had your address to send you a thank you card.

“There was lots of planning that went into making this a memorable time for Mrs. Taylor”, Sadie Jackson, junior said.

Barbra Snyder Mrs. Taylor’s assistant in class made the cake for the baby shower. The cake was moon shaped with a little baby on the top. Alex’s pap made all of the food Sadie, and Barbra got drinks. Alex and her gram got the favors and decorations and Sandi got ribbons for Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Vargo, one saying mommy to be and the other saying grandma to be. The one game there was you had to put a message in a diaper for the Taylor’s for a keepsake.

“I didn’t know about it but noticed a few students acting strange at varying times—students knowing about my meeting with Alex Veit’s mom after school that day who normally would not know about a teacher/parent meeting (especially when it is not with their parent(s)), students whispering at strange times in class, students requesting announcements to be made in class that I knew nothing about (collecting monies for a birthday gift for Mrs. Snyder, the Health Tech Assistant, when I had never been asked to participate or heard anything about it),” Mrs. Taylor Health Teach teacher, said.”

There were door prizes, games and presents for the soon to be parents. Mrs. Vargo had brought baby pictures of the soon to be mom and dad (Mr. and Mrs. Taylor) for everyone to see. Mrs. Patton the school’s nurse made Mrs. Taylor a baby bib; it was a doctor’s coat that said Doctor Taylor.

“Throwing a baby shower requires a lot of time, coordination of people, and funds. I know this through a few showers I put together for my sister and hospital coworkers. I don’t know where students would have the time and effort, in addition to the demands of being a student, athlete, and work, to put something together. Some students have jobs but the monies they make are as good as spend buying cars, paying for car insurance, gasoline, and other costs of being in extracurricular activities. I am blest to have such caring, thoughtful, and generous students,” Mrs. Taylor said.
