Eagles handle Bisons in first round playoff action

By Corey Snyder

Friday night was the first night of district 5-6 AA playoff action. Number one seeded Eagles went into game one looking to get back to the D5-6 AA championship game, which they have lost to Forest Hills the past two years.

Tyrone had to go through Bedford first, a team that was 6-4 going into the game but came out 6-5, but not before giving Tyrone football a scare early in the 3rd quarter.

The game started off with a defensive battle. Bedford’s defense shut out Tyrone’s offense three straight drives. Tyrone’s defense answered every time though holding the Bisons to zero points in the first quarter.

The first score of the game was in the second quarter when Chris Getz took the handoff and ran in for 6.

The Bisons looked for an answer and found one quickly on their next drive when Shippey called his own number and took it 35-yards for the score that knotted it up at 7.

After completing only one of his first eight passes, Steve Franco found his rhythm and shared the ball with fellow wide out Nick Patton for a 19-yard touchdown that took the score to 14-7 going into the half.

“It was right before the half and we needed a big play. Steve found me and threw a great ball,” Patton said.

The number eight seed Bedford came out looking for the upset in the third quarter making a statement with their first drive by taking the ball down the field. Then on the last play of the drive, Bedford cashed in an eight-yard plunge, tying it up at 14 with 7:02 left in the third quarter.

“I wasn’t worried about our defense. I knew we would step it up and stop their offense,” Corbin Nevling-Ray said about Tyrone’s defense.

Tyrone wasn’t going anywhere. The Eagles answered with their own score on the next series. Tyrone ran an option play, and when Franco saw an opening, he took it in himself for the 20-yard score that put the Eagles back on top 20-14 after the failed point-after attempt.

Tyrone’s defense took control of the end of the third quarter, stopping the Bison’s offense and getting the ball back to their offense.

Getz got the next couple calls on the next drive. He found the holes the guys in the trenches were creating and took it in for the 6-yard score.

“The line was tremendous. The holes opened up in the second half,” Getz said.

The fourth quarter only brought in one score by Tyrone’s quarterback Franco who hooked up with Patton for an 11-yard touchdown.

Tyrone’s defense did the rest and held the Bisons to zero points in the fourth quarter to seal the deal with a 34-14 win.

Tyrone will play host to the winner of the Forest Hills, Penn Cambria game next week at Grey-Veterans Memorial Field at seven o’ clock.
