Sophomores travel to local windmills

By Rhett Everhart

On May 21, 2012 the TAHS sophomore class will be taking a trip to observe the workings of Duke Energy’s windmills in Cresson and their effect on the local community.

“We will learn how windmills create energy, and we will also learn some of the engineering behind the wind turbines,” Mrs. Lumadue, biology teacher, said.

Funding for this trip was provided by an Environmental Education Grant. The school is using some of the money to look at how alternative energy is created and used locally.

“On this trip I hope to learn about how the windmills impact the environment, and I would also like to learn how much energy they supply local towns,” Jared Beckwith, sophomore said.

Students will leave the school at about 8:45a.m., and they will arrive at Cresson at about 9:30a.m.

“I am very excited to go on this trip because it will be a good opportunity to learn about green energy and as any other student would say, ‘It’s a day out of school,’ ” Zane Friday, sophomore, said. “ Also I love windmills, so I’m excited about that too.”

Students will go to the company warehouse for an hour-long presentation. Then the students will travel to the actual turbine site where the windmills are located.

After lunch, students will travel to the pump station where the energy from the windmills is transformed into useable energy and transferred to businesses, homes, and power companies.

From there the students will leave and arrive back at the school between 2:15 and 2:30p.m.
