TAMS celebrates National History Day

By Ron Greene

On Friday, March 2nd, TAMS seventh and eighth grade students participated in National History Day.

According to TAMS 7th grader Mckay Skelton, “National History Day is a chance for students to inform others of the past so they can accurately judge the present, and set themselves for the future.”

Every year nearly one million students participate in the nationwide NHD contest. Each student chooses a history related topic. He or she researches the topic making sure to take in all valid information. After analyzing, he or she concludes by showing the significance of this certain time in history.

Projects were arranged in the TAHS library, and also filled the middle school LGI room. The three classes competing were Ms. Hetrick, Mr. DePiro, and Ms. Mitchell, which could explain all the necessary space.

Some students have been working on their projects all year. If students did not turn in a National History Day project, he/she received a failing grade for the 3rd marking period.

There are two divisions in the National History Day program:
•Junior Division — grades 6-8
•Senior Division — grades 9-12

Within these divisions are nine categories of participation at the local, state, and national competitions.
•Paper (individual only)
•Individual exhibit
•Group exhibit
•Individual performance
•Group performance
•Individual documentary
•Group documentary
•Individual web project
•Group web project

“[Participating in NHD] was a great experience, and felt very good to show others my interest in history,” Mike Lewis, student, said.

Although this is a school program, the options are limitless. It is a great chance to put your imagination to the test.
