2012 TAHS track and field starts season

By Corey Snyder

TAHS varsity track team opened their season Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at Philipsburg Osceola against Penns Valley and Philipsburg. To prepare, the team went through conditioning and pre-season workouts.

“The hills [the distance runners] climb and the miles they run in practice are metaphors for all the challenges they face--endure pain and keep an eye on the goal to find success on their jobs, in their relationships, with their health,” Stephen Everhart, distance coach and high school English teacher, said.

Tyrone boys team won districts back in 2009 and 2010 and just missed out last year, falling short to Bellwood.

“I hate Bellwood. They think they are so good. I beat the [Bellwood high jumpers] last year even though the judges do everything they can to make me lose. I want payback this year,” Charles Wilson-Adams, junior and track member, said.

Tyrone travels to Bellwood twice this year, first for the dual meet with Bellwood on April 26, and then for the Bellwood Invitational four days later on April 30.

“I just want them to beat the tar outta Bellwood,” Everhart stated.

“My goals for this year to help all of my throwers in shot put, discus, and javelin to achieve their own personal best,” Adam DePiro, throwing coach and middle school history teacher, said. “Whether that means adding a foot or two to a throw or breaking the school record, track is a great place for individual achievement.”

“A major goal this year is also to have the Girls Team get a win in a competition,” DePiro said.

Tyrone’s Nick Patton is returning for his senior year and is looking to make his way back to Shippensburg for States. Patton ran in the 200m, 400m, 1600m relay, and the 400m relay in states last year.

“It feels good to get recognized for your hard work,” Patton said. “I feel good about this season. It is my last year so I’d like to make it back to States and get back on top.”
