Read Across America Day was on Friday, March 2nd, it is also known as Dr. Seuss’s birthday. National Education Association’s annual reading day is to help motivate children around the world to read. It has more than 50 national nonprofit partners.
According to the NEA website, the idea started in May 1997 when a small reading task force got the idea to make a day dedicated to reading and getting children excited for reading. The idea was then born on May 1998, the following year.
TASD is also celebrating NEA’s Read Across America Day. There was a meeting on February 23rd asking teachers about their favorite author and why. Teachers were also asked about their favorite books last year as well.
This Read Across America day, there will be the cast of the new movie “The Lorax” that will join in on showcasing Dr. Seuss’s book, “The Lorax” as well as recording two promotional videos. The cast will be in New York alongside the NEA’s president Dennis Van Roekel.
“My favorite author is Francis Chan,” Mr. Small said. “Francis Chan addresses today’s issues from a biblical perspective. He challenges us to be authentic Christians”
The teachers decided to set up a reading day from March 5-9 to read to K3 classes. They can either read a Dr. Seuss book or their favorite book. The reading will last for 5-10 minutes.
There was also a poll that was done about students and staffs favorite authors. We found out that the top three most favorite authors of books were: Dr. Seuss, Stephen King, and Nicholas Sparks.
