TAHS teams earn MAC league championship and 1st seed in playoffs

By Corey Snyder

February 18, 2012 the TAHS boys and girls basketball teams won the MAC league championships at Bellefonte Area High School. The men took down Central Mountain as the Lady Eagles defeated Bald Eagle Area.

“[Winning the league championship felt pretty good. It was one of our goals from the beginning of the season,” Stephanie Hammond, junior, said.

“We played very well defensively. We were really good on containing [Bald Eagles] driving to the basket,” Coach Luke Rhoades said about his team Saturday.

The Lady Eagles and Hollidaysburg are the only two teams that qualified for the playoffs. These two teams will meet Wednesday February 29, 2012 at 7:30 following the Tyrone boys at 6:00pm in Altoona.

Both Lady Eagles and the boys’ team are first seed going into the playoffs.

“[Being first seed] isn’t really an advantage because there are only two teams. We are guaranteed a spot in the state playoffs. Our goal is to win the district championship,” Rhoades said.

Practice will be a must for both teams on preparing for their respected teams.

“Practice will be a little more intense and we will be focusing on Hollidaysburg,” Hammond said.

“Working on the little things trying to execute better will be the focus this week at practice. We will try to be precise as possible. We will try to work on reacting quicker, that will be the key,” Rhoades said about practice.

The boys’ team won their league championship in fashion whipping up on Central Mountain at Bellefonte.

“Winning the league championship felt great,” Charles Wilson-Adams, junior basketball player, said.

Tyrone men’s team took on Penns Valley in second round play at Hollidaysburg High School gym on February 24, 2012 at 6:00. Tyrone won the game 41-33.

“It feels good to be first seed because last year we weren’t that good. Everyone will be trying to come at us because we are number one. We will have a target on our backs like it should be. We will have to practice harder and be more focused going into playoffs,” Wilson-Adams said.

  1. I think it's great that the girl's and boy's teams both won their league championship games and both have the first seed in districts. It's really cool that not only did the football team make it to districts, but the girl's and boy's basketball teams did too. Tyrone is really only a AA school, so it's amazing that such a small school is doing this good athletically.
