Eagles win on senior night

By Corey Snyder

Tyrone football went into Friday night’s game hoping to lock up the number one seed in District 6-AA playoffs. Juniata, on the other hand, was fighting with their backs against the wall trying to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Eagles head coach John Franco had had this game moved to Mansion Park for hopes that he could savor Grey-Veterans Memorial Field for the playoff opener next week.

The Eagles didn’t let that distract them.

Tyrone started off strong holding Juniata’s offense on the first drive. After the punt the Eagles came out firing and scored on a screen play designed for J.D Dorminy that went 60-yards for the score.

“I made a couple of moves, and I found a lane,” Dorminy said about his score.

The defense of the Golden Eagles stopped Juniata’s offense again after the kickoff, but on the punt to follow Markus Wagner fumbled the catch and Juniata recovered deep in red zone.

Juniata took advantage of the mistake and cashed in a 9-yard run to tie it up at seven.

Tyrone answered the mistake when Steve Franco found Dorminy again for a two yard score that took the 1st quarter to an end with the Eagles up 14-7.

The second quarter was a defensive battle with the Eagles shutting out Juniata’s offense, and the Eagles only scoring one touchdown when Chris Getz ran it in from 14-yards out.

“The line was blocking great and the holes were just opening up,” Getz talking about his score.

Franco compiled 260-yards passing on the night while Getz ended up with 196-yards rushing on 22 attempts.

In the second half the Eagles got the ball first and took the ball down the field running Getz in for the score with 9:29 left in the third quarter.

Juniata didn’t have an answer for the high-powered offense of the Golden Eagles when Franco saw Nick Patton fellow wide-out down field and tossed him the ball for a 25-yard score.

“I beat my guy, and Steve made a great throw. I had one guy to beat to score and I wasn’t going to be denied,” Patton said about the play.

Going into the fourth quarter the Eagles had a sizable lead, but they were not satisfied. Franco set up at the four yard line and looked for his receivers to get open, but when everything closed up he ran it in himself that would seal the deal for the Eagles 9th win of the season and lock up the first seed in the district 5-6 AA playoffs.

Tyrone rolled up 523 offensive yards and the defense did their part holding Juniata to only 180-yards.

Tyrone holds the opener to Bedford next week at Grey-Veterans Memorial Field. Juniata ends their season at 6-4.
