Eagles escape first half errors

By Corey Snyder

Golden Eagles first half performance on Friday, September 23 didn’t please most of the Tyrone fans because of their five turnovers and six penalties, but in the second half when the fog rolled in, so did a determined Tyrone team that overcame the first half’s mistakes.

“We played poorly in the first half, but listening to Coach Franco’s quote ‘Forget, focus, fight’ was going to help us in the second half,” junior wide receiver Charles Wilson-Adams said.

Tyrone was still up 21-10 at half-time even though all the mistakes they had made.

On Tyrone’s first drive they had the ball around their own 24-yard line when the first snap from scrimmage was fumbled between senior quarterback Steve Franco, and sophomore center Seth Umholtz. Huntingdon took that turnover and turned it into points when the Bearcats running back Houston Riley ran it in from one yard out after a pass was deflected by Wilson-Adams and into the hands of Danen Cobaugh at the five.

Tyrone answered within 42 seconds on their next drive when Franco hooked up with Wilson-Adams for a 20 yard touchdown.

“It felt great, but I didn’t even realize that I scored I was so pumped,” Wilson-Adams said. “I just wanted to get out there and kill them and finally shut them up.”

In the second quarter with the scored knotted at seven, Tyrone put up another score with a six yard run from senior running back Chris Getz. The next set of points wouldn’t come until Huntingdon converted an Eagles fumble into a 35-yard field goal by Colton Neubauer with 3:12 left in the first half.

Tyrone answered with their own drive right down the field that led to a Franco one yard plunge to make the halftime score 21-10.

The fog made an appearance in the second half of the game. “I thought [the fog] was awesome, it threw a twist to the game that I never experienced,” senior Nick Patton said.

The fog wasn’t a factor for the eagles in the second half though. Tyrone blew it open with tough defense and execution on offense. Tyrone’s defense was led by senior defensive end Corbin Nevling-Ray with two sacks on the night and shutout the Bearcats offense. “The defense did exceptionally phenomenal,” Nevling said. “It felt great getting two sacks; I got after the quarterback the whole game.” Patton also had a 43 yard interception returned for the first touchdown of the second half.

Tyrone’s offense had overcome the first half blemishes in the second half with Getz scoring his second touchdown on the night from 10-yards out. Franco also hooked up with junior wide receiver Hayden Zook for a 33-yard touchdown. Sophomore running back James Oliver scored the last touchdown of the night with 11:07 left in the game.

Tyrone improved to 3-1, and Huntingdon is now 1-3. Tyrone hosts the Dragons of Central on Friday, September 30, 2011 kickoff is at 7:00.
