For at least fifteen years, the students of Tyrone Area School District have been participating in what is known as the Dawg Pound. The Dawg Pound consists of any students from freshman to seniors. The Dawg Pound is the student section that cheers on the sporting teams usually at their home games.
According to Mr. Murphy, if the students want the Dawg Pound to remain a part of the TAHS, there are a couple rules that need to be followed. Some of the basic rules are avoiding foul language, personal attacks to fans or referees, antagonizing fans, or using racial and inappropriate language. Also there are a few practical rules like no jumping on the bleachers, and that the school dress code still applies at the games.
Mr. Murphy, TAHS Dean of Students, believes that the Dawg Pound students are fairly well-controlled, but there is some times where the students could cross the line. Murphy believes that the students are all passionate about the game, but doesn’t want any of the students to forget what’s acceptable and what is not acceptable.
“It’s a group of good kids, and their intensions are in the right place. They know about basketball and are passionate about it,” Murphy said.
There wouldn’t be a Dawg Pound without the students. Justin Miller, senior, also believes the Dawg Pound is like being a part of a cult, but a good cult. Being with a group of his friends cheering on his other friends in the stands is something that he loves. He believes that the team loves the presence of the Dawg Pound.
“It’s a ride together, die together type of group, and all of my friends being there to support our friends on the floor are my favorite part,” Miller said.
Another student that partakes in the Dawg Pound is junior Jordan Henderson. Henderson really enjoys being a part of the Dawg Pound and cheering on the team at their games and believes that they can really have a successful season with the Dawg Pound beside them each step of the way.
“I can make the Dawg Pound better by screaming my pure hardest at each game,” Henderson said.
Aaron Gurekovich, junior, participates in the Tyrone Dawg Pound, and he enjoys each minute of it. He believes he is helping the Dawg Pound because he is helping the basketball team have more confidence and make the team play better while people cheer them on.
“I think the basketball team does like us there.” Gurekovich said, “I mean, who doesn’t like fans cheering for them?”
