Opinion: Join Prom Committee

By Karah Postreich

Members of Tyrone Area High School’s prom committee were responsible for organizing and decorating for the junior/senior prom entitled Twist and Shout held on Friday May 18.

Students elected into Prom Committee are able to leave school two days before prom, May 16 and 17, to decorate and set up souvenirs for students attending prom at the Altoona Discovery Center in downtown Altoona.

For underclassmen considering prom committee:

• Run for a class officer – Being a class officer gives you an opportunity to help make more decisions regarding prom.

• If you don’t become a class officer – Don’t worry. Only five people are elected into office. Continue to be on the committee. It’s a great opportunity to work with other students outside of a school environment. Also your opinion will still be heard.

• Help make decisions – if you don’t speak up and share your ideas, your prom experience will be less than the best.

• Take what you would enjoy and make it an idea – If you’re a fan of the 80’s, tell the others, maybe they like that decade too.

• Work ahead – Just like homework, if you brainstorm ahead of time, it will make the decision-making easier. If you are able to come up with good ideas, s hare those with your peers (that are in prom committee). then choose which ones you like most.

• Keep it a secret – If you tell everyone what the theme is before everyone gets their tickets, it ruins the surprise. Prom is much more exciting if no one knows what is happening ahead of time. If the secret is spilled it ruins the point of prom committee.
