All across the local region races and physical events that are created to help charities and to keep people active are held for anyone who wishes to run.
At these races a small entry fee is usually required for the race, and the distances are usually 5K and10K.
On March 19th the Joshua House, located in downtown Tyrone, held a 5&10K Irish Heritage Race.
A past local 5&10k race was the Bunny Blitz race, located at Harpster's Baileyville Ball Field, on April 7, 2012. Registration began at 8:45a.m.
The Doggie Dash race is on June 9, 2012, located in downtown Tyrone, and pre-registration is available, along with registration at the start. The race begins at 9:00a.m. and the participants are allowed to run with their dogs.
There will be a walk/5K race held on June 16, starting at 9:00a.m. held at Tyrone Reservoir Park to raise money for the Tyrone Boys Soccer Team. The cost to register is $15.00 per person.
The Tyrone Fall Classic is a race that is held in mid-October (Date to be announced) at Reservoir Park. The race benefits the Joshua House and the fee to enter is $15.00 if you pre-register and $20.00 if you register at the start. Registration for this race begins at 7:30a.m. and the race begins at 8:30a.m.
“I ran in the Tyrone Fall Classic last year and I placed second in my age group and I thought it was a lot of fun. I ran cross country to prepare for the race because it is a distance sport,” Grace McKernan, freshman, said.
According to McKernan, the best way to go about preparing for a race is to run distance, building up to the race so you don’t go into a race without being in shape.
“I suppose that it would be fun to run a 5K because it might be a chance to get together with friends and do something active. Plus I think it would be a great way to stay in shape. I think it would be a good experience and I believe it’s not what you put in but sometimes what you take away from an experience,” Jared Beckwith, sophomore, said.
Cross country distance coach, Tammy Wills said, “It’s vital to practice distance running before entering a race so your body is in good enough condition to not get tired and you don’t get sore afterwards.”
