In TAHS, seniors are able to take psychology and sociology college classes at TAHS which are taught by Mr. Kensinger (Mr. K), professor at Mt. Aloysius. During the first semester, he comes down every Tuesday and Thursday. During the second semester, he comes down every Monday and Wednesday. Throughout the year, he teaches during 1st and 2nd period, a total of 90 minutes each class period.
15 seniors took psychology and 12 seniors took sociology. Each class is $632.
Caleb Ayers, senior, said that sociology is “more worldly and expansive.” He also said that he likes that Kensinger is the professor for both classes because “he is awesome and has much knowledge about each topic.”
Kensinger said, “I like teaching here at Tyrone a lot.” He went on to say that because this year he has had some of the “sharpest students,” it has been “very rewarding” for him to teach here. Because his students here are so intelligent this year, he has a lot of hope for the future students here at Tyrone.
Josh Maier, senior, said that he likes sociology more because “sociology applies to real life more [than psychology] and there is less science involved.”
During the first half of the year, Kensinger teaches psychology. During the second half, Kensinger teaches sociology. He has been teaching those subjects along with Anthropology at the Mount for 12 years now. He said that teaching both topics here is awesome because both fit together. Psychology deals with the internal processes and sociology deals with “larger dimensions of forces.”
Ayers said that the tests from these two classes are much harder than the usual high school tests. The tests are a lot harder to prepare for because of the in depth information that the students are expected to memorize.
Macey Lucas, senior, said that “The out of class studying for tests requires a lot [of efforts on the students].”
Kensinger says that he enjoys teaching psychology much more than sociology because Kensinger is more of a clinical person which majorly deals with psychology. He has worked with behavior health professionals for 40 years.
Morgan Decker, senior, said that “[taking these two classes is] a good experience for college.”
Ayers said that he has no regrets about taking these two classes because of the interesting material and the amazing professor. He also loves the class discussions that take place every time he has the classes.
Jarrad Fuoss, senior, said that he likes sociology “because I am allowed to exercise my critical thinking and discuss current topics.”
Kensinger does not plan on retiring because he feels as though he is meant to be a professor and is in love with what he does.
