Mifflin County gets first win ever, Tyrone loses first home game since 2003

By Corey Snyder

Mifflin County won their first game of the season and first game as a team after losing to West Perry High School last week. Last time Tyrone lost at home was in 2003. Now 2011 Mifflin County a new school to the area of former Lewistown and Indian Valley’s football organizations combined into a AAAA powerhouse of a team. They came down to Tyrone on September 12, 2011 and gave Tyrone their first lost in eight years in the regular season at home in forty games.

Tyrone took on Mifflin County Monday night, but even the way the game started, Tyrone would be down 15-7 at the end of the first half. On Friday September 9, 2011 was the official start of the game. Tyrone got the ball with clouds in the sky but no sign of rain. Tyrone drove down the field in six plays and scored on a screen pass from Steve Franco to J.D. Dorminy. Tyrone was kicking off and Mother Nature took over. A flash of lightning lit up the night sky and the referees were forced to clear the field. Tyrone wouldn’t see the field again on that night.

The game was postponed and rescheduled for Monday September 12, 2011 at Gray Field. Senior quarterback Steve Franco wasn’t too worried about the team keeping their intensity up just because of the change of date.

“I was aggravated to the max,” Tyrone Senior Nick Patton said about the rain delay. “We all wanted to play.”

The game started at six on Monday September 12, 2011. Mifflin County you could say came out with a purpose battling the Golden Eagles to keep the lead, 15-7, and 21-13, 21-21 taking the game into overtime.

Tyrone had the ball first. The Huskies defense would make a stop to the Tyrone’s offense. Franco dropped back and threw a bullet over the middle to Patton but only to be met by a Husky defender simultaneously and knocked the ball into the air to be intercepted by another Mifflin County player.

Mifflin County now had the ball and it was their chance to win the game in overtime. The Huskies took the ball and on the first play from scrimmage, and they would plunge it in for the game winning touchdown by Lowber.

“The loss was disappointing especially because it was at home. We showed a lot of heart, but we made a lot of mistakes. We have to pick it up for Bellefonte next week,” Patton said.

Tyrone moves to (1-1) and will take on the Red Raiders of Bellefonte on September 16, 2011.
