Football players respond to Franco’s resignation

By Corey Snyder

Tyrone Area High School football coach John Franco told his players Monday, January 23, 2011 that he would be resigning from his 18-year coaching position unless the school board would come up with a better deal that would benefit him more.

Franco had a team meeting down in the field house on the 23rd. It was a sad meeting that almost had tears coming from Coaches eyes.

“I just wanted to thank you guys. It has been a fun ride,” Franco said.

Franco was hired a week later on Monday, January 30, 2011 as the new Altoona head football coach. This news wasn’t too shocking to his former Golden Eagle players.

“I am disappointed with the news. I would have liked him to stay, but he is doing what is right for his family and is the best decision for him,” Maverick Mills, junior said.

The players are taking a different outlook from this unfortunate event.

“There is going to be more pressure on us now. Everyone thinks that were not going to be good because coach is leaving. It will make us better,” Seth Welch, junior said.

2011 Tyrone football competed in the state championship game before falling to the Crusaders of Lancaster Catholic. The juniors that were a part of that team feel as they have some big shoes to fill and it will even be harder now that Coach Franco has left.

“We’re gonna shock the world,” Kolten Taylor, junior said.

“I feel as the team will respond as normal. Nothing will change,” Josh Fetters, junior commented.

Tyrone Area School Board is excepting applications for the new head coaching position for the next two weeks. After the two weeks is up they will start the interviews and quickly

“I want someone that is already a coach on our staff. I would like the same coaching staff back as last year just with one of them promoted to head coach,” Mills stated.
