TAHS holds 2011 Christmas Assembly

By Sadie Jackson

On December 21, 2011 Tyrone Area High School held a Christmas Assembly.

TAHS Golden Eagle Jazz Band provided instrumental music, POPS Extension sang “White Christmas”, Mr. Merryman made a cameo appearance, Student Council members performed skits, Honors English 9 sang a commercial, and Renaissance members announced the 2011 Holiday Door Decorating winners: Mr. Funicelli, Mr. Salamy and Mrs. Ellenberger.

Ben Makdad, junior, was the Master of Ceremonies, while Coleman Harris and Courtland Pannebaker, both seniors, hosted the game shows: Fear Factor, Jeopardy, Don’t Forget the Lyrics and So You Think You Can Dance.

“I enjoyed the assembly,” Pannebaker stated. “I like to be the center of attention.”

Student Council organized the assembly with the writing and directing help of Mr. Rhoades, Student Council advisor, and Mrs. Martin, math teacher.

“The assembly was definitely something that took at least a month’s worth of planning,” Rhoades stated.

After securing staff members’ and administrator’s approval to portray teachers as game show contestants, Mrs. Dobrowolsky, English teacher, edited the script. According to Rhoades the scripts had to be revised three or four times “before getting it right.”

“The students did a good job with the writing part,” Dobrowolsky said. “I just tweaked the language a little bit and helped them transition from point A to point B.”

Bethany Liddick, junior, assisted Martin in choosing music to accompany the skits.

“The songs added to the comedy and assisted with the overall effect,” Martin said. “I think the music was as important as the lines.”

Student Council rehearsed Monday-Wednesday mornings before Thursday afternoon’s assembly. Students were responsible for finding their own props like: dumbbells, UnderArmor shirts and coffee cups.

“I think the students really enjoyed it, and I think that the faculty overall enjoyed it. We haven’t had an assembly for a long time… I think it was a good time for everyone,” Mrs. Pinter, English teacher, stated. “[The assembly] is good for the school spirit. It’s good to make a fool out of yourself, to show a different side of yourself.”

Pinter’s character was used in both the Don’t Forget the Lyrics and So You Think You Can Dance skits. During the assembly, students also portrayed Mrs. Binus, Mr. Owens, Mr. Coleman, Mr. Everhart, Mr. Rutter, Mr. Funicelli, Mrs. Martin, Mr. Gruber.

Near the end of the assembly the teachers whose characters advanced were called to the stage where they and the entire student cast did the cat daddy dance.

Pinter was embarrassed to be on stage, dancing in front of the students.

“I like to dance, but it lasted so long. I didn’t know what to do,” Pinter said.

The Christmas assembly was an annual TAHS holiday event until when it was canceled last year when snow days kept students from finishing the student climate story.

Rhoades said he would consider doing another assembly like this year’s again in the future.
