TAHS athletes prepare for winter sports

By Rhett Everhart

The TAHS winter sports season starts on November 18th, 2011 with wrestling, basketball, and swimming practices running after school.

Jared Beckwith, sophomore, is a wrestler for TAHS.

“I like doing this sport because I like the thrill of competition, and I like the feeling of accomplishment when I pin my opponent on the mat,” Beckwith said.
To prepare for his winter sport season, Beckwith practices year-round by lifting weights and wrestling.

“I never really stop practicing. It’s a year-round thing. Also I’m excited for this upcoming season, and I’ve set a goal to place at least fifth in states this year. I expect to have a good season, and by the looks of it, we will have a pretty good team this year,” Beckwith said.

Lucy Raftery, sophomore, plays girls basketball for TAHS.

“I like playing basketball because I just like the game, and I always enjoy playing. It’s just fun. Sometimes it can be tough, but I always seem to pull through, and I have fun,” Raftery said.

To prepare for her sports season, Raftery attends seasonal basketball clinics, as well as working out in the fitness center.

“I’m getting pumped for the upcoming season. My goal is to get out there and win a few games. I have to say the team is looking good this year, and I think we can pull out some wins,” Raftery said.

Byron Stroud, freshman, swims for TAHS.

“Well, it’s my first year doing swimming, but I think I’ll like it because a lot of my friends are on the team from cross country, and it looks like it would be a good way to stay in shape,” Stroud said.

In preparation for the swim season, Stroud has been lifting weights and conditioning himself by running cross country in the fall.

“I’ll be practicing soon, and I’m excited to start because it’ll be a fun new sport for me, and this season my biggest goal is to just stick with all the other guys because it’s my first year. Also I think this season will be fun, and from what I’ve heard, we have a pretty good team,” Stroud said.
