According to Mr. Schoening, Academic Support teacher, few students have utilized after school help during the first month of school.
“I expect more students to come to Academic Support after grade reports are sent home,” Schoening said.
Academic Support is available to all middle and high school students. He offers Academic Support every Monday through Thursday from 3:15-4:15 PM in room 213.
According to Schoening, Academic Support is a good working environment for students, but there are not enough computers that are included in his classroom. If enough students need computers, he takes the students down to a computer lab to make sure they can complete their work.
He included that he ensures that students stay quiet so that students can focus, and he spreads the students out so that they don’t distract while other students working.
John Guy has said that the work environment inside of Academic Support was good for him to stay focused in.
Guy expresses that “[Academic Support] helped me get an A on a math test.” He also says that the reason he attends Academic Support is because “…I can get help with math.” Guy continued saying that the one-on-one time with a teacher improves his learning abilities, but he doesn’t like that Academic Support is a full hour long.
Two years ago, Ms. Haid was in charge of Academic Support. Last year, Shoening and Mr. Shedd split Academic Support duties. This year, Shed and Mrs. Anderson are the substitutes for Schoening when Schoening has meetings after school.
Schoening said that he would prescribe Academic Support for students that are struggling to keep their grades up in their classes because he can help if they don’t understand their homework, or if students need time to complete their homework. Even though Schoening is an 8th grade teacher, he says that he would still be able to help students that are from 9th-12th grade because he is certified. Schoening continues saying that seeing students improve is a definite plus, but when students that come with nothing to do.
