TAHS senior, Seth Barrett, won the American Legion essay contest at the state level with (his essay on the pro and cons of off-shore drilling). Barrett was the first state winner of this essay contest from TAHS.
Barrett’s essay appears in the 2012 edition of Stardust.
“Fishing and tourism venues along the coast lose billions in revenue, and millions like you question the perks of off-shore drilling,” (Barrett 56).
“It was a good feeling to win…good to know you’re writing something meaningful in life,” Barrett said.
The award ceremony was held in Grantville, PA at the Comfort Suites, where Barrett had to read his essay aloud. Barrett received a plaque for his winning essay and was refunded for his travel expenses.
“I’m just proud of Seth,” Mr. Everhart, English department head and eleventh grade teacher, stated. He came up with an innovative approach and used the stylistic and organizational writing skills we teach all of our students.”
“A flawless essay plus an imaginative angle, and maybe a little bit of luck as well.
Seth used a poignant narrative to begin what could have been a dry essay.
I’m sure this caught the judge’s attention.”
According to their website, the American Legion hosts an essay contest each year
for students in grades 9-12. Students that win are offered a variety of cash prizes and scholarships.
TAHS has never had a winner at the state level in this particular contest but has had two to three state place winners in the Voice of Democracy contest. Morgan Decker, senior, won a $1000 last year in the VOD contest.
